Chasing Lily

I love all these pictures from yesterday. I love them because they captured all the fun we were having. I know that even 20 years from now I will look at these pictures and smile, remembering what a blast we had chasing each other around the house.

Our house has a great layout downstairs -- it is a circle, you can run around and around. So it should go without saying that Lily loves to run around the house. She especially loves it when I chase after her. She actually tells me to "hide" because she has the most fun when I pop out from behind the couch or a corner and scare her. It is hilarious! Sometimes she anticipates me being there, but still shrieks with excitement; however, every once in awhile I am able to hide and completely take her by surprise -- it is great! She screams a long scream full of both shock and thrill. You would think the surprise would scare her in a bad way, but she absolutely loves it and asks for "more again" over and over. We both have so much fun, we have to take breaks to catch our breath from laughing so hard!
So yesterday I decided to chase her with my camera in hand. The majority of the pictures I got were blurs of Lily running by. Sometime she was so fast, I didn't even get her in the picture. But I did manage to get some great shots that I love! A lot were of her just stopped to catch her breath at the glass doors to the dining room -- but she looked so cute with her face squished up against the glass -- plus she was holding still, so I got a lot of pictures there! :)
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do . . .

Shopping

Yesterday afternoon Lily decided to only nap for about an hour and a half (instead of the solid 3 hour naps she has been taking lately). So she was slightly volatile and not very cooperative yesterday afternoon. I knew that we had to get out and mix it up some or it was going to be a very long evening. . . So we went shopping! I had been checking out this cute coat at Gymboree and I received $25 "Gymbucks" from our Gymboree class, so I knew if I wanted to get it I better do so by Sunday so I can take advantage of the $25 off! So we went to the new outdoor shopping center that is literally exactly one mile from home. It is so cute there -- they have so many nice restaurants (someday maybe we'll try them) and good stores too! It just opened at the beginning of the summer and new stores are opening all the time, you can tell they still have some more to do, but it is coming along nicely! Of course Gymboree was sold out of the coat in 2T (figures!), but it was still a nice excursion. The weather was perfect and I think Lily appreciated getting out! The best part was browsing at Borders. We went to the kids section and she was getting all excited pointing out all the books she has, "Dada! Elmo! Bunnies! Night Night!" At first I was wondering what she was screaming about and then I saw the Daddy Hugs book that she has as well as the Elmo book, Little Bunny's Bedtime and Goodnight Moon! It was cute. I found some other books that I will probably go back and get for Christmas or birthday gifts!! It is almost that time!! Here are some quick pictures I took while we were out:

There is a stream running through the shopping area. . . . it kinda reminds me of The Grove in LA.
Lily and the Pig (she is eating a pancake, Lily that is!)
They had this awesome outdoor sitting area by this huge fireplace! Looked so cozy!
......................
Chip got a new phone and Lily is obsessed with it -- even more so than all the other phones that she loves! Here they are chilling and playing with the phone:

Chip also asked that I send out a "press release" on his behalf. He has been overwhelmed with all the thoughtful calls from all his friends (and I got in trouble for blogging about his trip to the ER -- even though I asked permission from him first!). While he loves you all and is grateful for your concern, he hates the attention. :) He promises that he is OK and he will call you soon! I was stoaked that so many of Chip's friends read my blog! I don't even think most of my friends read it! :)

Chip Update and Bubbles!

Chip's tests went ok. He had another one this morning (an Echo test) and has an appointment with the Dr to go over all his test results on the 21st! I am kinda annoyed that we have to wait nearly 2 weeks to find out if anything serious is wrong; but then again I suppose that if it was something super serious they wouldn't be waiting 2 weeks to discuss it with him (at least that is what I'll keep telling myself!)

Last night we took a quick walk around the block. Lily wanted to get out and it was "Texas National Night Out." National Night Out is a nation wide event that encourages people to get out and meet their neighbors -- it usually is sometime in August, but since it is hot here in August Texas decided to push it back to October. The HOA sent news letters and encouraged people to have block parties, etc. . . so I kinda wanted to see if anything was going on and if we could meet some of the neighbors. So we walked around the block and didn't see a single person! Oh well, at least we tried! :) But it was strange because it is getting dark so early now. When we moved here it stayed light until 9pm and now it is already dark at 7!! I can't believe summer is already over. Plus it was a little chilly and I don't have any sweaters or jackets that fit Lily. All the ones from last winter are way too small. Guess we get to go shopping soon!! :)
..............................
Here is the new way Lily likes to go up the stairs:

She goes sideways, holding on to the banisters. It takes a lot longer than just crawling up. But I think she likes it better since she is standing up and going up -- makes her feel more like a big girl!
....................
Here are some great pictures I got of her playing in the bubbles this morning:

And reading her book. She can identify nearly everything in the book now!

I had a video of her blowing bubbles and Moo'ing like a cow, but it wouldn't upload for me today. Bummer. Maybe I can get it to work later . . .

Catching Up . . .

Since the last few days have somewhat abnormal around here (having Chip home changes our daily routine somewhat), I realized that there are some details that I have not blogged about. So while Lily is napping, Chip is off at his nuclear stress test and my laundry is going I figured it would be a good time to catch up some. . . .

Friday night we had dinner at Dave and Kristi's house. Lily absolutely loves Kristi and her daughter Taylor (she is surprisingly also not afraid of Dave). They have 2 little dogs, Fred and Ginger, who are a little hyper for Lily's tastes. However by the end of the night, the dogs had calmed down some and Lily was feeling more comfortable and she was giving the dogs kisses! It was so cute. I tried to get a picture, but I kept missing the actual kiss. He she is right after giving Ginger a smooch!

(recognize the overalls Michelle? They were Alyson's!)
......................
Saturday night I attempted to recreate the family dinner from last week, only this time I made Macaroni and Cheese. I mean what kid doesn't like Mac-n-Cheese?? Well, apparently Lily doesn't like it. I don't think she actually even took a bite. She just got some on her lip and that small taste was enough. Bummer too, I was so looking forward to having an excuse to frequently make yummy Macaroni and Cheese. We'll try again another time . . .

...........................

Sunday I got out the Elmo Halloween costume to see how it fit and if she liked wearing it. She was a little afraid at first and I can't say that I blame her -- it totally looked like I had skinned Elmo. It was creepy. After she walked around the costume for a bit she sat on it and I thought she wanted to wear it, but she would not let me put it on her. She just rolled around on it for awhile. It totally reminded me of our cat Britney and celery -- there is something about celery that gets the cat all excited, so I always throw a piece on the floor for her and she just purrs and rolls around on it. That is what Lily was doing with Elmo! So I don't think I'll ever get her to wear it. I can still return it for a full refund, so I am going to do that this week. It is really thick and hot and I doubt it will work out. It is a bummer since she loves Elmo so much, it would have been super cute. . . . maybe next year!

.............................
Also from Sunday -- I learned not to leave an empty bowl and sippy full of water around for Lily to find. She is obsessed with water, so she manipulates her cup so the water comes out, fills the bowl and plays in it. She wipes water all over her body and makes a big mess. I should have known something was up because she was sitting and playing so nice and quietly!

You can see Chip relaxing in the background. I was forbidden to take any pictures of him. The little sticky pads from the EKG ripped off the skin on his chest when he took them off and it is so sore and tended he has not been able to wear a shirt for days! So he freaked out whenever I got the camera out since he knew there was a good chance those pics would end up on the Internet! :)
............................
Monday getting ready to leave for playgroup -- Lily looked so cute I wanted to take a picture, but she was annoyed that I got the camera out. She was ready to go bye bye and was not in the mood for pictures!

Pretending to call Ga and Pa. She talks on the phone to no one all day long, but when my Mom is actually on the phone she hardly says more than "bye". But she loves to listen to her talk!

...............................
And finally a video from this morning. We were reading a book earlier with a cow and Lily kept saying "Moooooooooo" to the cow. It was the cutest thing ever. So I was trying to get her to do it on video, which of course never works out the way I want it to. She kinda moo'ed, but it was not where as good as the Moos she did off camera. But it is still a cute video. . . .

Lily's 1st Painting

Chip is feeling better and has his stress test tomorrow afternoon. He actually went into work for a few hours this morning to check e-mails and see what was going on. Lily and I had playgroup this morning, and we were the only ones who went! I actually don't mind when that happens because it is good for Lily to have one on one time with kids her age. We met this morning at Tara's house and she has a daughter who is 2 and a half and a set of 4 month old twins. Lily was obsessed with the babies. She would point out their body parts (toes, eyes, nose, etc. . .). She loved them and didn't even get upset when I held them. Well, actually she got a little upset because she wanted to hold them also! Tara was also nice enough to set up an area so Lily and her daughter Grace could paint! This was the first time Lily has ever painted! She was into it at first, but then wanted to go and see the babies which was OK with me since she was making me nervous waving the paintbrush around. I was just waiting to see paint splattered all over the kitchen! Here is the masterpiece she created:

Here is a video from last night. I think both Lily and I were going a little stir crazy after being home watching football all day with Chip. She obviously had a lot of energy to get out. She was dancing like this in the kitchen for a good 20 minutes!

Chip's Night Away From Home

The reason I was up in the middle of the night and could not sleep on Friday (and reading random articles about cheese) is because Lily and I were home alone and Chip was at the hospital being admitted for chest pains.

We had gone to dinner at a friend's house and on the way there Chip began to have chest pains. He said he was fine, but he didn't look fine to me. So after we got home and the pains were still there I made him go to the ER. I wish I could have gone with him, but we both agreed it was best to just get Lily to bed and he'd keep me posted. Of course they rushed him in right away and gave him a EKG -- which was abnormal!! So they admitted him and kept him overnight. I was never too scared, but I was sure glad that I made him go to the hospital! Lily and I went in the morning and sat with him until the afternoon. He was supposed to be released around 1pm, but didn't get home until about 4pm since they had to run more tests. Everything looks to be good. The cardiologist said it was not a heart attack. The X-rays and blood tests all looked normal. Apparently an abnormal EKG is not necessarily a problem, some people's heart rates are just "abnormal" on an EKG test -- everyone is different (at least that is what the Dr said). Anyway, he was released and told to relax and stay in bed until he can have a stress test performed to rule out any heart issues. The Dr is hoping to get him in for the test this Tuesday (we'll get an appointment set tomorrow). I am pretty confident that the stress test won't reveal any problems. They have to be extra cautious since he is a diabetic; but I really think (and Chip agrees) that the chest pains were stress induced. He has been so stress out lately and working so much. It is just taking it's toll.. . . but we'll find out for sure sometime this week.

So that has been our weekend! Chip is exhausted since he didn't get any sleep in the hospital and couldn't sleep last night because he kept dreaming about problems at work (probably not helping his condition). Plus Lily is SO excited to have Daddy home and she is kinda wearing him out. I actually got yelled at for trying to play with them! I was told, "NO MAMA! BYE BYE MAMA!" She wanted her Daddy all to herself! It was cute.

Here is Lily visiting in the hospital:
We stopped and got Daddy a balloon. I figured it would kept Lily entertained while we visited! She was having a lot of fun running around that hospital room. I think she liked the sound her shoes made on the hard floor. It was a nice room. It is a nice hospital and the staff was super friendly. They offered food and beverages to Lily and myself and Chip had a full on menu of food to choose from for his meals!

I am so stupid though because I lost the balloon! Lily and I stopped at Walgreen's on the way home from the hospital and had the balloon with us. We had to get Chip some baby aspirin as prescribed by the Dr. Anyway, when we were done at Walgreen's I noticed the balloon was not in the car?? Where did it go?? I am such an idiot!! It had to have escaped when I was getting Lily out and into her stroller. Since I wanted to just run in and out, I put Lily in the umbrella stroller; well I always leave the car door open when I am getting the stroller out and set up so it doesn't get too hot. So the balloon must have flown away and I did not even notice!! I had too much on my mind. I was SO sad. That turtle is off for an adventure . . .

The Best Snack On Earth, Indeed!

I can't sleep. So I somehow stumbled across this article from the September 2008 issue Men's Health Magazine online. The title, "The Best Snack On Earth" grabbed my attention; and as someone who loves to snack, I had to click through and see what what they found to be the best. I really wasn't expecting to find any spectacular information -- usually these stories are so lame. So I figured it would reveal that an apple or sardines or something equally un-fun to snack on was the best snack on earth. Imagine my surprise (and total excitement) to find that it was CHEESE!! Not just cheese, FULL-FAT yummy CHEESE!! If you know me at all you know my favorite foods in the universe are grilled cheese sandwiches, lasagna, quesadillas, cheese enchiladas and pizza (notice a theme here?) It is like all the same meal, but from different countries!

So I decided to share this wonderful article . . . Enjoy!

The Best Snack On Earth

Full-fat cheese is not only loaded with protein, calcium, and flavor, but the fat it contains just might help you lose your gut for good.

It's unavoidable advice:
If you're going to eat cheese, it should be the fat-free or low-fat kind. Trouble is, that usually limits your choices to mass-produced, vacuum-sealed cheeses that have had much of their flavor sucked out along with the fat. So it's hardly an appetizing proposition. And for what real benefit? Fewer calories and a lower risk of heart disease? Not so fast.

"The combination of protein and fat in regular, full-fat cheese is very satiating," says Alan Aragon, a nutritionist in Westlake Village, California, and the Men's Health Weight-Loss Coach. "As a result, eating full-fat cheese holds your appetite at bay for hours, and I've found that it cuts down my clients' food intake at subsequent meals." Aragon's advice: Enjoy snacks of full-fat cheese especially if you're on a diet. "Just don't eat it mindlessly," he says.

And if you're worried about your cholesterol, chew on this: Danish scientists found that when men ate a whopping 10 daily 1-ounce servings of full-fat cheese for 3 weeks, their LDL (bad) cholesterol didn't budge. Which isn't to say you should live on the stuff--just that you don't need to fear it. Full-fat cheese can be a healthy snack and a great way to make a bland meal taste better. "Cheese is the new wine," says Terrance Brennan, chef and owner of Artisanal Fromagerie, Bistro & Wine Bar and Picholine restaurant, both in New York City. "There are thousands of different aromas, textures, and flavor profiles."

So look beyond the singles and strings and into the gourmet cheese section of your supermarket (or shop online at artisanalcheese.com), and use our guide to discover the best cheeses you aren't eating.

The superspread:
Robiola
Step away from the Cheez Whiz: Robiola is the best way to top a Triscuit. This Italian cheese is soft, like Brie, and it tastes as rich as butter. Spread it on a whole-grain cracker or baguette slice, and round out the snack with grapes or cantaloupe. For another great spread, try Brillat-Savarin, which is so creamy it's been called the cheese equivalent of ice cream.

The anytime snack:
Roncal
A firm sheep's-milk cheese, Roncal's nutty flavor and chewy texture make it a fine stand-alone snack. Or, to add a touch of sweetness, you can give it a light glaze of cherry or raspberry preserves. A delicious alternative is Comté, one of the most popular cheeses in France. Besides being a great snack, Comté can also be a tasty filling for a grilled-cheese sandwich.

The salad enhancer:
Sainte-Maure
This French goat cheese makes any salad taste better. But don't try to crumble Sainte-Maure like you would other kinds of goat cheese--it's too soft. Instead, serve it on the side of a mixed-green salad. For the dressing, combine 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar, 1/3 cup walnut oil, 1 tablespoon finely diced shallots, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and some black pepper. Nab a bit of cheese with your fork, stab some lettuce, and bite down. The lemon and black-pepper flavors of the cheese blend perfectly with the earthy walnut oil.

The flavor king:
Aged Gouda
Most cheeses can be aged for weeks to months, but a well-produced Gouda has spent 3 to 5 years in a cave. "Cheese is aged to develop its flavors," says Scott A. Rankin, Ph.D., an associate professor of food science at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The result is like a good Parmigiano Reggiano, but with rich caramel flavors. Eat thin slices with a green apple or pear.

The beer buddy:
Montgomery's Cheddar
When you chomp into this cheese, don't expect it to taste like the factory-formed orange bricks you find in your supermarket's dairy section. This is authentic cheddar, from Manor Farm in Somerset, the county in England where the cheese originated. Its lingering flavors of buttermilk and horseradish balance well with any kind of beer and make American cheddar seem bland. "English farmhouse cheddars from Somerset are the cheddars of choice," says Steven Jenkins, the author of Cheese Primer.

The wine companion:
Hoja Santa
This creamy goat cheese from Texas is wrapped in leaves of hoja santa, an herb that imparts licorice and mint flavors. Serve it with a glass of Riesling or sauvignon blanc. White wine is usually a better complement to a cheese plate than red is, because its acidity balances the fat in most cheeses, says Brennan. Another great cheese to eat with vino is Cypress Grove Chevre Purple Haze, a goat cheese from northern California.

The dessert cheese:
Bayley Hazen Blue
After biting into this Vermont-made blue cheese, many of our tasters exclaimed, "It tastes like chocolate." The fudgelike flavor even has a hint of apricot--quite a feat considering this is just moldy milk. Eat it alone, or drizzle a drop or two of honey on it for an even sweeter (but still healthy) treat.

Our Family Dinner

This is a terrible thing to admit, but last night was the first time we all ate the same dinner together as a family. I guess maybe I should rephrase that and say a home cooked meal since the three of us have shared a pizza (Lily loves pizza) and she's eaten various foods from restaurants and drive-thrus with us. But last night I cooked dinner and we all ate it! Normally, by the time Chip gets home from work Lily has already eaten and Chip and I eat on our own. If we are all here together we often have chicken which Lily is not a fan of if it is not in nugget form. I've tried to get her to eat my food, but it is usually a no go. Last night should have been no exception; the plan was to have chicken, brown rice and veggies. But when I went to make the rice I noticed bugs in the un-opened bag! Ewww! So I had to quickly change my plan. The chicken was already cut and marinated, but Chip didn't want just chicken and veggies -- too healthy and not filling enough. So I had to rummage through the pantry. I found taco rice that expired in July 07 (not sure how it made it from CA to TX); oatmeal, crackers, cheerios, granola bars, etc. . . finally I found some penne pasta and marinara sauce. I don't cook pasta that often since I usually eat a lean cuisine pasta for lunch and dinner when Chip is not here (I don't trust their meat). Chip was good with pasta and I knew Lily would be happy since she actually likes pasta. So that is how it happened. The three of us sat down to eat dinner together as a family! I'm sure we could recreate the moment if we wanted pasta every night -- or Chip and I were willing to have nuggets for dinner! :) But we'll keep working on her, someday she won't have as much of a choice and she'll have to eat my cooking! :)

Mommy's pasta is yummy!
Just chillin, eating my dinner.

Here are 2 photos from the morning, a lot of her toys are still downstairs from the playgroup on Monday. I try to bring one up whenever I go upstairs, but there are quite a few toys and she is having fun playing with them in the front room!

I think she was playing the piano with her behind! :)

Gotta get my nose in a book

I joined a neighborhood book club with some of the moms from playgroup last month. Our book for the month is Something Wicked This Way Comes. I recall buying the book previously in High School, but I never read it. The first night I got the book out I read the first 40 pages . . . . and I haven't picked the book up since. It wasn't bad or anything, I hadn't really even gotten that far into it. It is just that the new fall TV season started and Chip and I are now addicted to playing Mario Kart on the Wii at night after Lily goes to sleep, so I just never got around to reading any more of the book. Anyway I am bring this up now because I am off to read. The meeting is Tuesday!! I can't believe it is already October -- I thought I still had tons of time to read. They said not to worry, a lot of people don't finish or even start the book. It is just a opportunity to get out and drink wine. :) But I'd like to have it read. . . so wish me luck!

Here are some pictures from Gymboree this morning. Today was Lily's best class ever! She participated in all the activities; tried new things and didn't freak out when other kids walked by her! I was so proud of her!

Balloons and Halloween Costumes

Sorry no post yesterday, I had the worst headache for most of the day. So I was just relaxing during my normal blog time!

Yesterday morning we went to Tyler's first birthday party. He is in the neighborhood playgroup (although they don't live in our neighborhood?). I knew a lot of the people there from playgroup and got to meet some new people. Lily had fun although there were a lot of people running around, but she played some. She didn't go into the bounce house, but she didn't make me carry her everywhere, so that was great! The best part for Lily was the balloon she got with her goody bag! She went crazy for the thing!

She made me a tad nervous because she kept pushing the balloon up against her face. I was so afraid it was going to pop and traumatize her forever!

............................

Lily has begun speaking in third person, just like Elmo! We were playing last night with a toy and she kept putting it on my head and saying "Mama head." Then she started to say what sounded like "lay head." I though she was saying "leg" and "head", so I put the toy on my leg and then my head. This was so not what she wanted. She said "No, no, no. Lay head." I finally realized that she was saying "Lily head" So I put the toy on her head and she was so happy -- both because she got what she wanted and because I understood her. I have noticed it all morning. It variates between "lay" and "lee", but she'll say "lay. hand" and point to her hand and that means she wants to hold something; or "lay. down" which means she wants to sit down. It is too cute.

Here are pictures from this morning. I was considering going to a playgroup at a nearby park, but we decided to stay home and play instead.

Blowing Bubbles
Playing around with the camera!
...............................

My readers have some questions (Hi Linda and Aunt Karen)!

First question: what happened to the music on my page? Well, I was getting sick of the same song over and over, so I had turned my speakers off awhile back and had intended to change it up soon. Since I never got around to finding new songs for the play list, I just took it off altogether for now. When I have the time I'll try to find some new tunes and get it back up on my page.

Second question: what is Lily going to be for Halloween? Great question. Since she is so obsessed with Elmo I thought it was only fitting that she be Elmo. However after discussing it with some people who are more familiar with the weather here at Halloween time, I have discovered that it is common to have 2 costumes since there is a good chance it could be 50 degrees and there is an equally good chance it could be 90 degrees! So I am a little concerned that Elmo may be way to warm since it is all fur. We have 2 events, the HOA neighborhood party on the 25th from 3-5 in the afternoon and the MOMS Club party at 4pm on the 30th. So there is a good chance that it could be warm since they are in the afternoon. . . . I hate to waste money on 2 costumes. However, initially way back before we ever thought we'd ever live in Texas, I had the idea that Lily would be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. Then we moved here and I thought that may be kinda common and lame. But now I am reconsidering the idea and thinking that the cheer leading outfit could be a backup to Elmo and if we don't wear it on Halloween, she could wear the outfit as her Thanksgiving dress since the Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving!!! I am pretty sure she'll enjoy dressing up in both for some time to come. . . assuming she doesn't have a major growth spurt!
