Gone Fishin'

Last night we went fishing at the golf course!! It was Lily's first ever time fishing! My Dad has been fishing there for the past week or so -- the pond in his neighborhood is full of algae and since they are supposedly a "green" neighborhood, they can not use any chemicals to kill it. So he is catching catfish and carp from the ponds at the course and transporting them to the pond in his neighborhood to take care of the algae problem. Very environmentally friendly. He wanted to take Lily fishing on Sunday night after dinner, but it was getting too late so we said we would go out on Monday night. Lily was so excited -- it was all she could talk about all night and day was "going fishing with Grandpa".

First we had to stop at Target and get Lily her very own Princess fishing pole!

I think she liked playing in the golf cart best of all.
She's fishing!

Just a few minutes in and she is already bored and dragging her pole on the ground.

She caught something!

Her favorite part was reeling it in -- she loved turning the knob-thing (I am not a big fisher).

There it is -- Lily's first fish ever!
It is kinda hard to see since it blends in with the dirt.

Lily's 1st fish.

My parents still have the very first fish I ever caught (when I was probably close to Lily's age) in their freezer in CA. While I never actually looked at it or did anything with it, it was always kinda cool to know it was there. So, I thought I'd do the same for Lily. But as I watched the poor, disgusting, ugly, little catfish flop around on the ground I couldn't do it. I couldn't kill it just to stick in our freezer and never really be looked at again (plus I hate fish and didn't really want it in my freezer next to my Skinny Cow ice cream cones), so I changed my mind and decided to give him a new life in the neighborhood pond. I think Lily will respect my decision not to follow with tradition. She can have my fish if she wants it. :)

Yes, I even ended up fishing. I was just sitting there relaxing and my Dad handed me a pole to hold. And of course, I caught a fish. Lily had to help me reel it in, since that is her thing.
Everyone caught fish. We were only there an hour or so and we caught a good dozen fish. Dad finally discovered the magic bait when it comes to catfish. Bacon. We could have caught fish all night long using raw bacon. Gross, but true. Lily was kinda spoiled her first time out since every time we cast out, we caught a fish.

Demonstrating how to reel it in.

After about an hour a bug flew too close to Lily's face and she was done. She ran back into the cart and kept yelling "I want to go home." until we finally packed up and went home. When we got in the car I asked her if she had fun and she said "No" so I asked if she she wanted to go fishing again and she said "No". But I asked her again this morning and she said that she would go fishing again with Grandpa. She was so excited to go this time -- I think her expectations were a tad too high. I mean, it is fishing. :)

Love the fishing and the story about your first fish being in your parent's freezer. That has to be one disgusting fish by now! What fun!!
